ADC109 Studio Design I | Professor Paula Behrens | Spring 2023

Cardstock, basswood

When developing this piece, I had difficulty moving away from structured, aligned symmetry. I had to force myself to place pieces asymmetrically.

I come from a rigid social science background, so early in my design career I had to - and still have to - expend effort to move away from the rigid and into the flow. It’s something that I am consciously battling through my designs.

In the final piece, there is a dynamism between mass and void, with heavier areas and near-empty spaces.

Moving about the piece, you will find various stacked, hanging, cantilevered, and stepped components, further adding to the visual interest. From above, the jagged-like elements coalesce to create meandering pathways to unexpected places.
