Cardboard Chair
ADC109 Studio Design I | Professor Paula Behrens | Spring 2023
Cardboard
Our goal was to design a full-sized functional chair created solely using corrugated cardboard.
We spent a full class period analyzing what exactly made a chair a chair - from its dimensions, its materials, its comfort, its back support, and beyond.
My love for origami heavily influenced this piece. I knew that paper curved in on itself and locked in place would create tensile strength without needing an excess of support. Out of this process presented the curve of a leaf, integrated into the chair in locks on the back, and scored curving corners on the seat.
I struggled for multiple iterations to find an elegant solution for the base to support the dynamic, irregular shape of the seat. Thankfully, I received insightful feedback from my professor and classmates. The final piece the sitter can relax into, as the seat naturally reclines slightly while still providing ample support.
