Fourth Side Pavilion

Everyone knows that a triangle has three sides... But what if they don’t? For this project, I took inspiration from B.F. Sherman’s 1993 discovery of the fourth side of a triangle.

The combination of multiple circles with the sharp edges and points of the triangle lent itself to a spiraling, gently sloped pavilion with a dramatic, pitched roof and an entrance “gate” in the form of the fourth side.

Located in the heart of Francisville, Philadelphia - just east of the Fairmount neighborhood - this site is currently home to a local dog park and community garden. When developing this piece, I spoke to residents who relied on the open space this park provided. I worked to integrate the existing neighborhood amenities in order to retain the communal purpose.

Thus, the site plan delineates space for an expanded and enhanced fenced-in dog park and an enlarged vegetable garden. Additional greenery around the pavilion creates an urban oasis deep within the city.
