Morning Commute Cafe

ADC192 Color and Lighting | Professor Ian Tornay | Spring 2024

SketchUp, Lumion, Photoshop

For this project, we were tasked with designing a cafe while applying the lessons we learned during the semester on color and lighting. This concept combines streamlined Art Moderne with 1950s Retro Futurism and 1970s commuter colors taken from a vintage Washington, D.C. metro poster.

The lines curving about the walls evoke the heroic design of Art Moderne, while the sconces and chandelier, both in bronze, call back to the industrial future of the 1920s. UFO-like hanging pendant lamps and twisted metal chairs add space-age futurism of the 1950s and 60s.

The colors, borrowed from the 1970s D.C. metro map, add a fun and funky charm to the space, and lend themselves perfectly to a bustling cafe to fuel up before starting the day.

Up, down, mood, and ambient lighting from myriad locations keep the space bright and inviting, while also highlighting exciting architectural details such as the swooping shelves and the attention-grabbing back bar.
