Case Study: Iglesia San Martin

ADC163 Architectural Visualization | Professor Ariel Vazquez | Spring 2023

Autodesk Revit

For our final Revit project, our professor suggested this modernist Henry Klumb church in Puerto Rico. As a church, there is not a lot of variety in spaces, but the chapel is studded with intricate architectural detail, such as the skylight that illuminates the altar.

To progressively add to our skillset, we massed multiple components to bring this piece to life, including the pews, the crucifix, and the modern baptismal. Our professor modeled the bell in Rhino and provided it to us, although now I could do it all myself.

The irregularity of the floor plan provided a unique challenge to this piece. The ramps to the altar alone made us all pull out our hair, including our professor! But, with a lot of perseverance with trial and error, they finally fit perfectly.

As well, further compounding our struggles, there were very few construction documents to reference. Despite being designed by a prolific architect, the record of this Puerto Rican church is severely lacking. However, pictures online and from our professor’s visit helped us to recreate each small detail.
