ADC109 Studio Design I | Professor Paula Behrens | Spring 2023

Cardstock, chipboard

We were tasked with creating a working abode for a poet in which she could use one space as a writing studio and the other to practice tai chi. We were specifically required to create dynamic light filtration and shadows to delineate both a calm, contemplative space and an active, energetic space.

I was inspired by the give and take from equally important forces: the Sun and the Moon, Yin and Yang, and the push and pull of the tides.

Original designs for this piece featured a parabolic roofline and dramatic fenestration to project dramatic shadows. Thanks to unique advice from my professor, I abandoned thinking about this project and as houses as what I already recognized as a house.

In the final piece, there are no doors and no windows. Instead, the wall+roof segments diverge and converge to create light-emitting slits, casting intense shadows throughout the space. By opposing these two rooms, the sunlight and shadows at any given time of day ensure dynamism between a bright energy and a dim calm.
